Where is Panama’s Costa Abajo? Costa Abajo means “down coast” and the reference point is the Panama Canal. Locals around Colon, Panama refer to the area across the Panama Canal, going south, as down coast or Costa Abajo.

This can be a little confusing until you remind yourself of Panama’s geographic “twist.” Going South along Costa Abajo will eventually take your north toward North America whereas going north to Costa Arriba will end up taking you south to South America.

Costa Abajo has always been an isolated area in Panama, so it has not been developed. First of all, it is across the canal from Colon. There not many paved roads. The road situation is changing. With Panama’s aggressive road building campaign, many areas of Costa Abajo are becoming reachable by land. They have always been reachable by sea.

Costa Abajo is an area of sandy beaches, crystal clear waters ideal for sailing, and rolling hills. It has heavenly views of the Caribbean Sea.

There are a number of marinas being built. Resort developments are in the works, but much of the area is still available. There are a number of very large parcels available for developers.

Currently, the main road goes thirty miles down coast past Neuvo Chagres to Miguel de La Borda. There are properties waiting for homes and businesses all along this route. The local expectation is that property values will go up substantially once the new expressway is completed between Panama City and Colon in mid 2009.
